Oxford and Nonnewaug have officially joined the South West Conference.
Today's News-Times points out that Nonnewaug is just competing in football and gymnastics, and will remain in the Berkshire League for all other sports. Nonnewaug played football at the JV level last season and went 5-5. The question is - will Nonnewaug be the next Woodland and have instant success on the field, or like Fairfield Ludlowe and struggle through infancy?
The News-Times also points out that Oxford will be known as the Wolverines, and will be only the second team in the state (Griswald being the other) to use that nickname. The paper left out one of it home teams though - Abbott Tech has been the Wolverines at least since my wife went there in the 80s. No varsity football for Oxford yet though, as they just have a freshman and sophomore class.
But the article points out that budget cuts at the new school are already affecting athletics. Right now, no extracurricular activities are budgeted for.
